The Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey selected Meredith Furbish, IAML-Russian 2020 and current M.S. Global Media and Cultures-Russian and M.S. International Affairs student, for a Monterey Summer Symposium Fellowship.

The Monterey Summer Symposium on Russia is a three-and-a-half-week program taught in Russian and English offering rising Russian scholars the opportunity to discuss topics including Russian history, foreign policy, and values in political decision making. As one of thirteen fellows, Furbish will examine Russia’s war on Ukraine and the regional and global challenges caused by it through supplementary courses on Ukrainian history, the evolution of Russian foreign policy, and diplomatic writing, as well as lectures, roundtables, workshops, and debates delivered by leading experts from the U.S., Russia, Europe, and China.

Furbish has supported research efforts with the U.S. Department of State, the NATO 2030 Innovation Challenge, and Georgia Tech’s Center for International Strategy, Technology, and Policy. In 2021, she published her first article, a collaboration between Johns Hopkins, Georgia Tech, and Imperial College London developing machine learning counter-disinformation techniques, in the NATO Review.
